Louisiana Sugar Refining and ASR Group Supply Food Donations for Hurricane Harvey

Houston Food Bank HOUSTON – The Louisiana sugar industry delivered a truckload of sugar Thursday (Sept. 21) to Houston to resupply the Houston Food Bank with the sweet ingredient.
Louisiana Sugar Refining (LSR) of Gramercy, La. suppliedeight pallets of its Southern Cane brand and ASR Group sent eight pallets of its iconic brand of Domino® Sugar from its Chalmette Refinery.
Lonnie Champagne, a Louisiana sugar industry leader, contacted Paul Wangler of ASR Group and Joel Van Timmeren of LSR and the two sugar refining companies put together a donation of more than 33,600 pounds of sugar for Houston's food bank.
"LSR and ASR Group teamed up in 2016 when the Baton Rouge Food Bank was flooded," Champagne said. "There was more involved logistically to put a together a truckload of sugar to ship to Texas, but the Cajun Navy set such a good example, we just felt it was the right thing to do to help the people of Texas through the Houston Food Bank. "
ASR Group, owner of Domino Sugar, has been producing refined sugar at its Chalmette Refinery for more than 100 years. The refinery, located outside New Orleans, was highly impacted by Hurricane Katrina.
"We know the great community need that occurs after a catastrophic event like Hurricane Harvey, and we were very happy to be able to supply food products to the residents of Houston during this time of need," said Peter O'Malley, ASR Group's Vice President of Corporate Relations.
LSR, a partnership of Louisiana growers and millers and Cargill, operates at the location of the vintage Gramercy Sugar Company and uses part of the old refinery in its operation. While LSR is a new venture, the location has been producing refined sugar in Louisiana for 122 years.
Larry Faucheux, CEO of Louisiana Sugar Refining, authorized the donation.
"Louisiana knows how to do its part and we were eager to give because so many have come to our state's aid when we needed it," Faucheux said.
