Louisiana sugarcane industry increases acreage and economic impact

As we move into the holiday season, we have much for which to be thankful when we look at the broader picture of the Louisiana sugarcane industry. The final report for 2023 shows that the industry remains strong as it enters its third century of sugar production. We’ve seen growth in both acreage and economic impact.

In 2023, sugarcane production expanded in a number of parishes, bringing the total acres of sugarcane planted in Louisiana to 532,000—an increase of 12,000 acres. This expansion is a testament to the enduring strength of the industry and its ability to adapt and grow in the face of challenges.

The economic impact of Louisiana’s sugarcane industry has grown as well. In 2022, it contributed $4 billion to the state’s economy, and in 2023, that figure rose to $4.3 billion. This growth brings more than just economic prosperity—it translates into more tax revenue to support the rural communities where our farmers live and work, and more jobs in areas where employment opportunities are limited. Today, the sugarcane industry provides approximately 16,000 jobs, supporting families across Louisiana from the field to the mill to the refinery, the local bank, tire repair shop, tractor dealership, insurance agency, fuel distributor, office supply store…etc.

None of this would be possible without the ongoing support of the American Sugar Cane League’s members. Their dedication and investment allow the League to continue funding research into improved varieties, pest control strategies and new processing techniques. These innovations help ensure that our sugarcane farmers can continue to meet the growing demand for sugar, all while maintaining sustainability and productivity.

As we look ahead to 2025, we will continue to advocate for policies that level the playing field and allows us to sustain sugar production in America. A strong sugar policy not only ensures a steady supply of safe, natural sugar for American families, but also supports the livelihoods of Louisiana’s farmers and processors, enabling them to make a lasting contribution to their communities and our nation.

This holiday season, I am especially thankful for the hardworking men and women of the sugarcane industry, and for the ongoing commitment of the American Sugar Cane League’s members. Together, we continue to nourish the nation, support our local economies and create a future full of possibility for generations to come.
