Louisiana’s sugarcane growers made their mark in more ways than one at this year’s Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation Convention in New Orleans. From important conversations on federal food policy to field-level conservation breakthroughs and a strong showing at the annual awards banquet, it was a week that reminded everyone just how vital sugarcane is to the state’s agricultural community.

Policy and Industry Conversations That Matter
At the annual Sugar Conference, Dr. Courtney Gaine, President and CEO of The Sugar Association, spoke about shifting federal food policies, nutrition labels and school meal standards, all of which could impact sugar markets in the years ahead. Gaine pointed out that while sugar consumption has declined in recent decades, obesity rates continue to rise which runs counter to conventional wisdom and highlights the need for sound, science-based policy.

“The challenge isn’t just about sugar anymore,” Gaine told the crowd. “It’s about the choices consumers are being pushed toward and making sure natural sugar remains part of a balanced diet.”

A Farmer’s Fix Changing Conservation Practices
Closer to home, St. Martinville farmer Buddy Oubre earned well-deserved attention for a harvester modification that reduces soil erosion, keeps nutrients in the field and improves water quality. His on-farm innovation, now being replicated with the help of the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) funding, is proving to be a game-changer for fields facing erosion and runoff challenges.

“It has made a world of difference,” Oubre said. “Our fields stay in better shape, and the water leaving our farm is a lot cleaner.”

Sugarcane Shines at the Awards Banquet
The week also brought well-earned recognition for leaders within the sugarcane industry during the Louisiana Farm Bureau’s annual awards banquet.

Bryan Simon, President of Vermilion Parish Farm Bureau, proudly accepted the President’s Award, the organization’s highest honor. Assumption Parish Farm Bureau, led by Lance Gaudet, earned a prestigious Four-Star recognition.

The next generation of sugarcane growers also made an impressive showing. Frankie and Mallory Sotile claimed the 2025 Young Farmers and Ranchers Achievement Award and Laura Hebert was named a finalist. Courtney Gerace was named Outstanding Young Farm Woman and Kyle Zenon earned a finalist spot in the Young Farmers and Ranchers Discussion Meet State Contest.
