Researchers have been conducting sugarcane research in Louisiana for over a hundred years. Sugarcane is a $1 billion industry in Louisiana and AgCenter-developed varieties that produce well in the state's temperate climate has contributed to industry economic success.
In parishes across south Louisiana, fall signals the start of “grinding season” — the time when farmers harvest their sugarcane crop and carry it to one of 11 mills where it is processed into raw sugar and molasses.
